Economics is a sober science. I love it for that. It makes me feel like I can see the world as it is.
Economics is the most exciting science I know. It explains why people act the way they do. Nothing has ever interested me more than understanding human action.
As a result, economics gives me the means to live my life in such a way that it's for my own good. And for the good of others.
My favourite economic saying sums this up: Economics is the art of making the most of life.
Such economics, which is close to life, is not aloof but has a solid connection to reality. It lets us never forget that every life has a beginning and an end. And only if we think about this end, if we keep reminding ourselves that life is limited, that nothing lasts forever, only then does every new day have the value that drives us to make the best of every new day.
Let's make the best of today.
Merry Christmas,

PS: At the place where the village of Kätzerode used to be, there is a plaque that explains. It says: The settlement was used for various purposes. Most recently, in the GDR, as a children's holiday camp. Finally, everything was levelled. The reason: Since the facility was near the heavily guarded border between East and West Germany, it should be prevented that people who wanted to flee the GDR could find shelter there.
