I saw this lone protester the other day in the city of Werneuchen, in the federal state of Brandenburg. The poster reads: Stop arms shipments!
As a recent survey shows, this opinion is not as isolated as the photo suggests.
A quarter of Germans (26 per cent) think the current support for Ukraine with weapons goes too far.
This opinion is even more prevalent in eastern Germany, where Brandenburg is located. When asked how to rate the support of Ukraine with arms, 40 per cent answered: "goes too far".
Why this widespread opinion?
Perhaps because sympathies for Putin's Russia are more common than one could wish. According to another survey, every third East German agrees that NATO provoked Russia for so long that it had to go to war.
