I came across the village of Tiefensee (more precisely, it is only a district) in the state of Brandenburg this weekend.
There I discovered a dilapidated, formerly stately house.
A house from a better time. Possibly built in the 1920s. When Tiefensee was known to many Berliners as a place for excursions. There used to be seven restaurants. The regional train and special trains, as well as buses, brought the day trippers to Tiefensee.
Then came the Nazis, then the GDR. Then the reunion. Then many people moved away. No work, no perspective.
The traces of the development of the past decades are still visible. The vacancy rate is high, houses decay.
The further away you go from Berlin, the more houses like the one I discovered can be seen. While the vacancy rate in the Berlin area is around 2 per cent, it is more than 10 per cent in the wider metropolitan area.
But as so often, negative developments also have positive side effects. I couldn't resist getting a little closer to the object…
